The standards-based critical thinking activities of Reading Detective® develop the analysis, synthesis, and vocabulary skills children need for exceptional reading comprehension. The activities are especially effective at helping children understand more challenging reading concepts such as drawing inferences, making conclusions, determining cause-and-effect, and using context clues to define vocabulary.
Methods
Students read and analyze short literature passages and stories that include fiction and nonfiction genres. Then they answer multiple-choice and short-response questions, citing sentence evidence to support their answers. The lessons are organized with levels containing several single-skill units working up to comprehensive mix-skilled unit.
The course overall is open to students on grade-level (6–12) as well as remedial users. The primary text, “B1”, has been recommended for grades 7-8. The “RX” text has activities that are "prescriptive" to help under-performing students in all grades (6–12) improve their comprehension skills. The reading level is form grades 4–6; while story content is from grades 6+.
