"Developing the Writer in You" is a course we've designed to put the fun back in writing! All of our children are "writers"! We just have to help them unlock their creativity! Classes are provided for two different age groups. This allows us to focus upon their specific needs, and adjust lessons to be appropriate for your children.

Children are natural writers! Atypical teaching method for "writing" is to teach composition in conjunction with grammar, spelling (and handwriting).... a philosophy that squelches the creative process! We separate the creative process from an editorial process; then, after an initial ideas blossoms, the focus can turn to a supportive editing role for children's masterpieces that show how grammar, spelling develop their express. In this way, the children don't become disheartened with the process!

I have developed my own curriculum for the class using a host of courses as my foundation. They include Wordsmith Writing Curriculum Series, If You're Trying To Teach Kids How To Write, You've Gotta Have This Book by Marge Frank, Shurley Grammar and Composition, and many more. Since most students have already learned the fundamentals of writing (from sentences to paragraphs to short compositions and  reports), I strive to stretch them through essays, personal narratives, and stories. Older students will also learn skills for resumes and cover letters, and abstracts. Older students will also learn how to create a précis and annotated a research paper.

We also foster your children development and skills in imagery, use of the imagination, vocabulary development and a love for words!  In both classes, but especially for the young writers, I mix sensory experiences with the creative writing instruction to enhance descriptive, persuasive, narrative and expository writing.
