Students need to have an extensive vocabulary!  Just as artists use paint palettes to create pictures abounding with nuances of color, writers and speakers need a comprehensive vocabulary to communicate effectively and intelligibly

When students have extensive vocabularies, they are better able to master Critical Reading and English sections in standardized tests, where they’ll recognize words, roots and associated words readily because they have a strong foundation in vocabulary and etymology. Additionally, the fundamental vocabulary skills students build will assist them in learning foreign languages with greater ease and understanding.

The SOE Vocabulary courses will use the ‘Wordly Wise 3000’ 2nd Edition series. The focus in each course will be:

  1. Skills & Strategies
  2. Reading First Strategies
  3. Vocabulary development
  4. Reading comprehension
  5. Critical thinking
  6. Using a dictionary and pronunciation key
  7. Word usage
  8. Test taking/assessment
  9. Context clues
  10. Synonyms and antonyms
  11. Using word parts to determine meaning:
    1. •  prefixes
    2. • suffixes
    3. • Greek and Latin roots
  12. Homophones
  13. Picture clues and captions
  14. Analogies
  15. Word origins

Middle School Vocabulary Course
The Middle School vocabulary instruction focuses on preparing students with strategies to unlock the meaning of words they will encounter in content area texts and literature. The 2008/2009 course will teach two levels (Grade 7 and Grade 8). The parent can choose which textbook the child should use depending upon student's level. Parents should plan ahead and determine student levels by looking at course word lists.

High School Vocabulary
The High School vocabulary instruction will also help prepare students with strategies to unlock the meaning of words they will encounter in texts and literature, and provide additional strategies useful in the high-stakes-tests of the SAT and ACT. The new text also introduces a Standardized Test Prep Preview section to give students practice with other formats they may encounter. The 2008/2009 course will teach two levels (Grade 9 and Grade 10). The parent can choose which textbook the child should use depending upon student's level. Parents should plan ahead and determine student levels by looking at course word lists.

About Wordly Wise Series books
Three thousand carefully selected words taken from literature, textbooks, and SAT-prep books are the basis of this exciting vocabulary series that teaches new words through reading, writing, and a variety of exercises. Each lesson's alphabetized word list gives pronunciations, parts of speech, and concise definitions, and uses each word in a sentence. Interesting, engaging, and acting as a mnemonic anchor for the word, sentences are anything but boring! Comprehension of the vocabulary words is facilitated and reinforced through the five different exercises repeated in each lesson; new for the 2nd, expanded edition of Wordly Wise, reading first strategies as well as Greek and Latin word studies with prefixes, suffixes, parts of speech, synonyms, antonyms, and analogies.
